Increased Food Sales as Home Meal and Home Party Culture Takes Root Amid COVID-19 Spread Last Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Emart is launching a 'Family Food' event to help customers prepare for home parties during the year-end season.

Emart announced that from the 9th to the 15th, it will offer various food items such as sashimi, sushi, meal kits, and fruits at prices up to 40% lower.

Featured products include 'Domestic Yellowtail Sashimi' and 'Flatfish and Fresh Salmon Sushi.' In the ready-to-eat meal category, popular meal kits like 'Peacock Ilhosik Sukiyaki' and 'Peacock Log House Dakgalbi' will be offered at a 30% discount. 'Peacock Eorangson Dumpling Hot Pot' and 'Peacock Our Home Cheonggukjang Stew' have been selected as Peacock Hero items and will be sold at a 30% discounted price each. Purchasing both products together grants an additional 10% discount.

A fruit discount event will also take place. During the event period, Emart will sell about 10 varieties of strawberries, including unique types such as 'White Strawberry,' 'Vitaberry Strawberry,' and 'Kingsberry Strawberry,' at affordable prices. All banana products will also be discounted by 30% when purchasing two or more.

Wines, essential for home parties, will also be included in the price event. Argentine wine 'Terra Argenta Malbec' will be offered at 8,900 KRW, more than 30% off.

Emart has prepared this large-scale food promotion because it expects related demand to increase again this year-end following last year due to the impact of COVID-19. Analyzing last year's performance, Emart found that the monthly sales rankings of key food items such as sashimi, sushi, and meal kits changed significantly compared to the previous year. While January was the month with the highest sashimi sales throughout 2019, December became the top month for sashimi sales in 2020. Sushi and meal kits also recorded their highest sales in December 2020.

Although fruit items vary by season, making absolute sales comparisons difficult, the sales growth rate stood out. In December 2020, Emart's fruit sales increased by 12.6% compared to the previous year, marking the highest sales growth rate of the year.

This trend has continued this year as well. From the 1st to the 7th, Emart's sashimi, sushi, and meal kit sales increased by 19.3%, 10.1%, and 9.1%, respectively, compared to the same period last month.
