Shinan-gun Secures the Highest Nationwide Selection for 'Fishing Village New Deal Project' with 43 Billion KRW Funding Sinan Manjae Port Breakwater ? Asia Economy

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) has been selected as the nationwide leader with three new target ports in the ‘2022 Fishing Village New Deal Project’ and will promote the project with a budget of 43 billion KRW (30.1 billion KRW national funds, 12.9 billion KRW local funds) by 2024.

According to the county on the 7th, the ‘Fishing Village New Deal Project’ is a project led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries with the vision of realizing an ‘innovative fishing village’ that people want to visit and live in. It aims to create jobs through marine tourism and revitalization of the fishing village economy, improve the quality of life of fishing village residents, and achieve national balanced development by modernizing essential infrastructure in fishing villages and promoting integrated development of fishing villages and ports utilizing local unique resources.

Sinan-gun was finally selected for 4 sites in 2019 (Manjaedo Port, Saengkkim Port, Jinri Port, Haouri Port), 5 sites in 2020 (Damul Daedun Port, Dangsa Port, Odo Port, Jaewon Port, Chupo Port), 2 sites in 2021 (Umok Port, Wangbawi Port), and 3 sites in 2022 (Byeongpungbogi Port, Okdo Port, Hongdo 2 Port), securing a total of 14 sites nationwide?the most in the country?with 184.5 billion KRW. The county promotes community-based SOC projects (breakwaters, piers, etc.), regional specialization projects, and capacity-building projects centered on local councils.

A concrete achievement of Sinan-gun’s Fishing Village New Deal Project is the nationwide first completion of Manjaedo. With a total project cost of 7.7 billion KRW, Manjaedo improved mooring facilities, piers, and walking trails, bringing a transportation revolution by reducing the high-speed ferry travel time from Mokpo to Manjaedo from the original 5 hours 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. This has resulted in very high resident satisfaction and became an opportunity to prove the effectiveness of the Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project.

Currently, the number of tourists and anglers visiting has greatly increased, energizing the entire island and significantly contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.

Although Sinan-gun has achieved the highest number of selections in the Fishing Village New Deal Project, it possesses 4 national fishing ports (13% of Jeollanam-do), 13 local fishing ports (15% of Jeollanam-do), and 198 small ports and harbors (23% of Jeollanam-do). There remain about 190 target ports to be maintained, so the county hopes for continuous expansion and implementation of the Fishing Village New Deal Project.

Additionally, with the active support of fishing village residents for the project and efforts from related organizations, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to launch a ‘Post-Fishing Village New Deal Project’ as a public contest project in 2023. Furthermore, various projects such as fishing village and port modernization and support for local governments will be continuously promoted.

Park Woo-ryang, Governor of Sinan-gun, said, “Public contest projects like the Fishing Village New Deal Project are like rain in a drought, providing hope to financially strained local governments and residents. We will do our best to cooperate with the central government and related organizations to continuously discover and expand community-based living SOC projects and income-increasing projects.”
