[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Mr. Blue, an online comic and webtoon specialist company, announced on the 7th that the martial arts webtoon "Pungun Gakjan," produced and serviced by them, has achieved the number one spot in the daily ranking of the action martial arts genre on Kakao Page.
Exclusively released on Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon, "Pungun Gakjan" is a martial arts webtoon produced by Blue Comics, a subsidiary of Mr. Blue, based on the popular martial arts novel of the same name by author Jubi. Since the serialization of "Pungun Gakjan" began on the 1st, it has maintained the number one position in the daily ranking of the action martial arts genre on Kakao Page.
"Pungun Gakjan" is a work that deals with events that occur when the protagonist, who has roamed the battlefield for 13 years known as the "Evil Spirit," takes over an inn while hiding his identity according to the last will of a great general. It is a webtoon created based on the unique theme of a martial arts master managing an inn, emphasizing a story aspect that differentiates it from traditional martial arts works.
Mr. Blue holds the copyrights (IP) of the four great kings of domestic martial arts works: Hwangseong, Yaseollok, Samadal, and Haseungnam. It is the only domestic platform company that owns its own martial arts IP, with martial arts comics and webtoons accounting for about 50% of total sales.
Along with traditional martial arts works, Mr. Blue has been producing new martial arts works since last year to target younger readers and is actively servicing them domestically and internationally. As the new martial arts webtoon "Pungun Gakjan" has gained great popularity and response from readers, the company plans to produce and source additional new martial arts works to actively expand sales of new martial arts content.
A Mr. Blue representative stated, "Traditional martial arts comics such as 'Goe' and 'Yeomra' are being successfully serviced in Japan, a comic powerhouse, and we expect overseas sales of martial arts works to continue to increase." He added, "We plan to actively implement a One Source Multi-Use (OSMU) strategy utilizing the martial arts IPs owned by Mr. Blue."
