Gwangju Seo-gu Operates Kimchi-Making Experience Class for Multicultural Families

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Dae-seok) recently operated a kimchi-making experience class for about 20 participants from multicultural families and general households participating in the Nutrition Plus Project.

According to Seo-gu on the 6th, this education was prepared to help multicultural families adapt to Korean culture by passing on various traditional cooking methods of our native food through making kimchi for kimjang (kimchi preparation for winter).

It was also operated to create a place of harmony and form bonds by having time to communicate with general participants.

In particular, Park Ki-soon, CEO of Park Ki-soon Kimchi & Food Culture Research Institute, was invited to give lectures on winter supplementary foods and seasonal food intake methods, along with a low-sodium kimjang experience.

It was notable that an interpreter was supported by the Seo-gu Multicultural Family Support Center for smooth education progress.

A participant in the kimjang experience said, “Since I married into Korea in 2012, making kimjang was difficult, but through this education, I was able to learn kimjang while sharing stories, which became an opportunity to get one step closer to Korean culture.”

A health center official said, “We will continue to do our best not only to address the nutritional issues of multicultural families but also to help them live healthily and harmoniously as members of the local community.”

Meanwhile, Seo-gu received great responses last April by conducting customized CPR safety education for participants of the Nutrition Plus Project from multicultural families, covering emergency situations such as cardiac arrest and airway obstruction.
