[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] Amid the intense COVID-19 situation, new confirmed cases continued to emerge across the country on Sunday, the 26th.
According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on that day, a total of 2,339 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported nationwide. This is 153 fewer than the 2,492 cases reported at the same time the previous day. Compared to the mid-day tally of 1,534 cases from the previous Sunday (September 19), it is 805 more.
The previous highest was 1,604 cases on Sunday, September 19 (announced at midnight on the 20th), so even the mid-day tally is 735 cases higher.
Looking at the regions where cases were reported that day, the metropolitan area accounted for 1,683 cases (72.0%), and non-metropolitan areas accounted for 656 cases (28.0%).
By city and province, Seoul had 839 cases, Gyeonggi 700, Incheon 144, Daegu 115, Gyeongnam 94, Chungnam 78, Gyeongbuk 71, Chungbuk 58, Daejeon 51, Jeonbuk 43, Busan 42, Gangwon 38, Gwangju 28, Ulsan 20, Jeju 9, Jeonnam 8, and Sejong 1.
All 17 cities and provinces nationwide reported confirmed cases. Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at midnight on the 27th is expected to increase further, reaching around 2,500 to 2,600 cases.
The previous day, 279 cases were added after 9 p.m., closing at a final count of 2,771 cases.
If the final confirmed cases exceed 2,431 (as of midnight on September 24), it will be the third largest scale since the domestic COVID-19 outbreak.
