[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A report about a man estimated to be in his 60s pulling the accelerator of someone else's stationary motorcycle, causing a motorcycle accident, has become a hot topic, and the man's son has revealed a surprising backstory.

On the 2nd, a video titled "An unknown grandfather suddenly pulled the motorcycle accelerator... There was a truth we didn't know about that incident" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Han Moon-cheol TV.' In the video, a lawyer stated that he had taken down a video posted the previous day (the 1st) because he received a lengthy email and phone call from B, the son of the man in his 60s, A, explaining the context of the incident.

According to the video posted by the lawyer on the 1st, on the 26th of last month, on a road in Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, a delivery worker was placing items into a delivery box on the back of a motorcycle. At that moment, A suddenly grabbed the motorcycle handle and pulled the accelerator. Although the delivery worker tried to hold the motorcycle, it sped off and collided with another vehicle.

The delivery worker, who identified himself as a "23-year-old breadwinner," said, "Fortunately, no one was injured, but my motorcycle was severely damaged, so I can't work. The other party's car owner said 'It's okay' and left," adding, "But suddenly B called and said (A) has a heart condition and was startled, asking to file a personal injury claim. What should I do?" he appealed.

The delivery worker lamented, "This accident happened on the day I got a new motorcycle. Since the side needs to be completely replaced, it looks like it will cost about 2 million won."

The lawyer said, "If A's action was a simple mistake, it would not be punished as property damage due to negligence, but if he was aware that touching it could cause the motorcycle to move, he could be criminally liable for property damage with indirect intent. A must compensate the informant (the delivery worker) 100% for damages," he stated.

After the video was released, B contacted the lawyer's side saying, "I was so shocked watching YouTube," and "The video was maliciously edited, which is very upsetting."

B explained, "We were eating at a sundae soup restaurant to the left of the building where the accident happened. My father went outside to get some fresh air because he wasn't feeling well, and there was a motorcycle in front of him," describing the situation.

He continued, "If you look at the cut (CCTV) footage, the motorcycle shakes a lot while the delivery worker is placing food or something on it, and it seems to lose balance. My father saw that the young guy, like a grandson, couldn't keep the motorcycle balanced, so he watched for a while and, feeling sorry, tried to hold the motorcycle, which led to the incident," he explained.

In fact, the video B provided to the lawyer's side shows the motorcycle shaking significantly while the delivery worker is loading items.

B said, "The motorcycle driver was in his early 20s, and after the accident, he was speaking rudely to my mother and father. Later, during a call with me, he apologized, saying he spoke harshly and used rude language because of his hot temper."

He added, "Since he is a young guy trying hard to live, we thought it was right to give him money, so I told him to tell me what he wanted from the motorcycle driver," and lamented, "Actually, my father has a heart condition and was very distressed by that young guy's rude language and tone that day."

He revealed that three days after the incident, he watched the CCTV footage during a police investigation. B said, "I tried to settle by agreeing with the delivery worker over the phone, but I couldn't trust him because he kept changing the repair cost, and since he said he would file a civil lawsuit, I agreed to resolve it that way."

Meanwhile, after conveying B's position in the video, the lawyer called the delivery worker. The delivery worker said, "I didn't know the grandfather was trying to help," and "I apologized during a phone call with his son (B) yesterday. We agreed to meet and clear up the misunderstanding."

Regarding B's claim that the delivery worker used rude language and spoke disrespectfully, the delivery worker explained, "The grandfather was about to leave, and there was a dispute over handling the accident. I didn't swear. The disrespectful tone was just saying 'Please stop.' The voices got louder while reenacting the situation after the police arrived."

He added, "I felt awkward charging the person who was trying to help me, so I only asked for 200,000 won for the broken light," and said he personally spent 170,000 won to roughly fix the handle.

The delivery worker, who has to earn living expenses on his own because his father is ill, said he works from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. and earns 10 million won a month, adding, "I told the son that I want to meet the grandfather today and apologize."

The lawyer said, "Even if you cause damage while trying to help, you have to compensate," but added, "(However) the court can adjust compensation if it was done with good intentions. I think I would also try to hold the motorcycle when it was shaking," he concluded.
