Kim Young-hwan Suggests Joining Camp, Saying "Ruling Party Faces Concentrated Poisoned Arrows, Protecting Yoon Is Reform"

Former National Assembly member Kim Young-hwan is entering the election campaign office of former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the 16th.

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Former National Assembly member Kim Young-hwan announced his support for Yoon Seok-yeol, the leading opposition presidential candidate and former Prosecutor General, on the 16th.

Kim said to reporters on the day, "(I am) someone who does not need any position or title, but due to the urgent situation, I came with the thought that I should go and help (former Prosecutor General Yoon)." He added, "The ruling party in power is focusing its poisoned arrows on him, but the protection around him is weak."

He continued, "Former Prosecutor General Yoon is someone who has the merit of breaking the Democratic Party's momentum and has experience fighting against power," and said, "Protecting candidate Yoon Seok-yeol is a mission of the times and a reform."

However, he has not officially joined the campaign yet. Lee Seok-jun, former Chief Secretary for Policy Coordination in Yoon’s camp, said about Kim’s visit, "Based on his rich political experience, he will provide a lot of advice," and added, "We are discussing his specific role internally, but we expect him to play a significant role from the outside as he has done."

After meeting with former Prosecutor General Yoon, Kim said, "I came unilaterally today. I asked for a role," and when asked about specifics, he replied, "There was nothing like that, but I will visit occasionally."

Kim previously served as a Supreme Council member of the United Future Party, the predecessor of the People Power Party. During the 2018 Gyeonggi Province gubernatorial election, he was accused of raising allegations of an 'actress scandal' targeting then-competitor Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung, drawing attention to his future moves.
