Jang Seok-woong, Superintendent of Education, Expresses Intention to Run, Saying "There Are Projects Left to Pursue"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jang Seok-woong, Superintendent of Education of Jeonnam, hinted at the possibility of running in next year's superintendent election.
On the 24th, at a press conference marking his 3rd anniversary in office, Superintendent Jang expressed his intention to seek re-election in response to reporters' questions about his willingness to run again, saying, "There are requests from some quarters asking if I should run. A definite announcement will be made around the end of the year."
He added, "There are projects that have not yet been settled due to COVID-19 and projects that need to be promoted," and "There are evaluations from the Democratic Progressive Education Superintendent Promotion Committee and civic groups regarding the three years of Superintendent Jang Seok-woong."
Furthermore, he stated, "The Democratic Progressive Education Superintendent Promotion Committee and social organizations will either re-nominate me or create another candidate through a new primary method," and "I will fully abide by the results."
Regarding the current candidates mentioned for the superintendent election, he said, "They all have sufficient qualifications in terms of capability and character," and "If many such people run and present diverse opinions, there will be development in Jeonnam education."
Superintendent Jang Seok-woong, a former national chairman of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (JeonGyoJo), was elected in the 2018 election with 38.36% of the vote.
Superintendent Jang has served as the head of the Jeonnam branch of JeonGyoJo, director of the Deulbul Martyrs Memorial Project Association, vice president of the Jeonnam National University Alumni Association, co-representative of the Solidarity for Historical Justice, and co-representative of the Jeonnam Movement Headquarters for the Resignation of the Park Geun-hye Regime.
