[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-chul] Gyeonggi Province will implement a 'COVID-19 Vaccination Leave System' for public bus drivers in Gyeonggi Province starting in June.

On the 15th, the province stated, "'Vaccination Leave System' is a new quarantine measure in response to the possibility of spreading infectious diseases to many passengers and large-scale suspension of bus operations when drivers are infected due to the nature of public transportation."

In particular, the plan focuses on encouraging drivers to get vaccinated quickly and alleviating difficulties in operation caused by side effects after vaccination.

From today, the province will provide paid leave for two days?the day of vaccination and the following day?to public bus drivers (including those in the revenue-sharing management type), and will grant an additional day of leave if adverse reactions occur.

The target group includes 3,841 public bus drivers in Gyeonggi Province and 1,564 drivers of revenue-sharing management type buses scheduled to be converted to Gyeonggi public buses from August 1, totaling 5,405 people.

The province plans to minimize inconvenience to residents using public transportation by temporarily allowing temporary workers to cover the public bus service gaps caused by the vaccination leave for these drivers.

However, even if it is unavoidable that temporary workers cannot be hired and operation compliance rates are not met, penalties will be waived to encourage the implementation of the vaccination leave system.

Lee Yong-joo, Director of the Public Bus Division, said, "We will ensure that Gyeonggi public bus drivers get vaccinated promptly and resolve difficulties in bus operation caused by vaccination side effects, creating buses that residents can ride with peace of mind from COVID-19."
