"Why Aren't You Eating?" 30s Filial Impiety Man Sentenced to 16 Years for Beating Father to Death

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The court sentenced 16 years in prison for a heinous crime in which a man killed his father by beating him during an argument.

The Criminal Division 1 of the Western Branch of the Busan District Court (Chief Judge Lee Jin-hyuk) announced on the 7th that it sentenced a man in his 30s, identified as A, to 16 years in prison on charges of killing a family member.

According to the Busan District Court, A is accused of repeatedly hitting his father B (in his 60s) on the face and abdomen at a house in Buk-gu, Busan, where they lived together, early in the morning on October 25 last year, causing his death.

A had several arguments with his father B over meal issues starting the day before the incident.

The son, A, got agitated during a dispute about food with his father, who was taking medication for high blood pressure, and violently assaulted B. B was seriously injured, lost consciousness, and collapsed.

A did not take any rescue measures such as taking his collapsed father to the hospital or calling 119, and about three hours later, he called his older sister to inform her of their father's condition.

When 119 paramedics arrived following the sister’s report, B was already deceased.

A claimed that although a physical altercation occurred during the argument, he had no intention to kill his father and that he only struck B’s abdomen to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, not to assault him.

However, the court, based on the autopsy report, found that A had the intent to kill and severely assaulted his father.

Additionally, on the day of the incident, A did not open the door for firefighters who arrived after his sister’s report, claiming he had not called them, and he attempted to conceal the crime and evade responsibility by not properly explaining the circumstances to the police, which the court noted required strict punishment.

The court stated, “This is an antisocial and inhumane crime that society cannot tolerate, as it involved killing one’s father,” but also considered “the fact that the crime occurred impulsively during an argument” in its sentencing decision.
