[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] In the past week, 300 students tested positive for COVID-19. The number of student cases increased by 7 compared to last week.

According to the Ministry of Education on the 3rd, from April 27 to May 2, a total of 300 students and 39 staff members from nationwide kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools were confirmed positive for COVID-19. On average, 42.9 students and 5.6 staff members tested positive daily.

Since May, the number of confirmed cases has fluctuated. From May 20 to 26, the number decreased by 64 over the week but then increased again by 7. The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases among students in the first semester is 4,245, and among staff is 633.

The number of confirmed cases increased due to a cluster infection involving 35 students at a high school in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. The remaining students (999) and staff (116) all tested negative.

As of 10 a.m. on this day, 75 schools (0.4%) had not conducted in-person classes for a week, which is 18 fewer than last week. By region, Seoul had 17 schools, followed by Gyeonggi with 14 schools.

The number of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school students attending in-person classes (as of 4 p.m. the previous day) was 4,533,000, accounting for 76.4% of all students. By school level, elementary schools had 78.3%, middle schools 66.3%, and high schools 74.3% attendance rates.

Starting from the 14th, the school density standard for level 2 will change to two-thirds, which is expected to increase the number of middle school students attending in-person classes in the metropolitan area, thereby raising the middle school attendance rate.

In the past week, 145 new university students and 16 university staff members tested positive. This is an increase of 13 and 6 respectively compared to the previous week. On average, 20.7 university students and 2.3 staff members were confirmed positive daily. The cumulative number of confirmed cases among university students and staff are 1,916 and 187, respectively.
