Production Disruptions Expected for Tucson and Avante Models
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Hyundai Motor Company will halt operations on some lines at its Ulsan Plant 3 and Plant 5 due to a shortage of automotive semiconductors.
According to industry sources on the 14th, Hyundai has decided to suspend work on Line 52 at Ulsan Plant 5 from the 17th to the 18th. Line 52 at Ulsan Plant 5 produces the compact SUV Tucson and the hydrogen electric vehicle Nexo, and the suspension is reportedly due to a shortage of Airbag Control Units (ACU).
Ulsan Plant 3 will also halt operations on the 18th. Ulsan Plant 3 manufactures the compact sedan Avante and the small SUV Venue, and it is also affected by the ACU shortage.
Since last month, Hyundai has been repeatedly stopping and resuming production due to the automotive semiconductor supply shortage. Last month, Ulsan Plant 1 and Asan Plant were shut down, and on the 6th and 7th of this month, operations at Ulsan Plant 4, which produces the Porter, were temporarily halted and then resumed.
Meanwhile, the industry expects the automotive semiconductor shortage to peak this month and next month. Hyundai plans to review the possibility of additional suspensions for Plant 3 and Line 52 at Plant 5 depending on the parts supply situation.
