After Enacting the First Ordinance by Local Governments in 1998, a Total of 67 Individuals and 8 Organizations Awarded... This Year, 3 Disability Awards, 1 Individual for Disability Welfare Merit, and 1 Organization Selected
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) held the ‘23rd Yangcheon-gu Disabled Persons Award’ ceremony on the 20th to commemorate the ‘41st Disabled Persons Day,’ recognizing individuals, institutions, and organizations who have demonstrated exemplary living with determination despite difficulties caused by disabilities and contributed to the promotion of welfare for disabled persons.
The ‘Yangcheon-gu Disabled Persons Award’ was established by the district in 1998 as the first local government to enact the ‘Yangcheon-gu Disability Overcoming Award Ordinance.’ A total of 22 award ceremonies have been held to date, honoring 67 individuals and 8 organizations.
The ‘Disabled Person of the Year Award’ honors three exemplary and proud disabled persons who actively participate in social activities despite severe disabilities or have made significant contributions to improving the human rights and social integration of disabled persons.
This year, the awardees are Kim Jung-ok from Sinjeong-dong, who has brain lesions and multiple physical disabilities and works as a ‘visual artist’ while participating in various welfare center activities; Choi Seung-won from Mok-dong, who overcame a first-degree physical disability to become a vocalist and contributed to raising awareness of disabilities through lectures at local elementary, middle, and high schools; and Hwang Tae-gyu, who serves as the chairman of the Hope Ilgumteo Autonomous Committee and has set an example for peers by leading a model life and helping establish a foundation for their independence.
The ‘Disabled Welfare Merit Award’ is given to individuals and organizations who have actively supported disabled persons through sponsorship activities or volunteering, or who have made contributions to the independence, employment, convenience provision, and rehabilitation of disabled persons. This year, the award was presented to Kim Jong-woon, a counselor at the ‘People-Centered Disabled Independent Living Center,’ and ‘Good Samaritan’ (Representative Park Jung-nam), which has been volunteering since 2006 for low-income disabled persons and the elderly in the local community.
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, expressed deep gratitude, saying, “I sincerely thank the awardees who have overcome adversity and become role models for those around them, as well as those who have quietly dedicated themselves to disabled persons.”
