[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Market Kurly recently announced on the 23rd that the sales volume of Pa Kimchi has increased by 69% compared to the same period last year due to the recent sharp rise in green onion prices.
Market Kurly analyzed the sales volume of Pa Kimchi from January to March 21 this year and revealed that it increased by 69% compared to the same period last year. This figure surpasses the overall kimchi sales growth rate of 41% during the same period. As the sales volume of Pa Kimchi increased, there was also a change in the popularity ranking of kimchi. From 2018 to 2020, the top three kimchi sales were Napa cabbage kimchi, Baek kimchi, and Young radish kimchi each year, but this year, Pa Kimchi overtook Young radish kimchi to rank third.
Market Kurly attributed this phenomenon to the soaring prices of green onions such as Daepa and Jjokpa. It is analyzed that consumers, burdened by the high green onion prices, sought alternative products, leading to increased popularity of related items. In January and February this year, sales of raw green onion products like soil-grown Daepa and Jjokpa decreased by 33% and 7%, respectively. On the other hand, sales of side dishes using green onions, such as Jjokpa pickles, increased by 193%, and Pa Jeon (green onion pancakes) by 141%, showing a noticeable rise. Market Kurly expects green onion prices to stabilize once spring Daepa is harvested starting in April.
Meanwhile, since April last year, Market Kurly has been steadily introducing 'Project Kurly Fresh 365 (KF365),' which offers fresh foods essential to the dining table at reasonable prices. Starting with 10 products including fruits and vegetables, KF365 currently offers 45 items ranging from vegetables such as Daepa, eggplant, zucchini, and bean sprouts to meat, seafood, and fruits.
