[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Last year, the combined domestic and export performance of livestock processed products in Gangwon Province showed a slight increase compared to the previous year, but export value significantly decreased.

According to the province on the 4th, the domestic and export value of livestock processed products produced within the province last year was recorded at 396.8 billion KRW, an increase of 4.6 billion KRW (1.17%) compared to 2019 (392.2 billion KRW).

This figure comes from the production performance of 163 livestock processing businesses in Gangwon Province as of the 2nd of this year.

By industry, meat processing accounted for 118.8 billion KRW, dairy processing 273 billion KRW, and egg processing 5 billion KRW. Among these, exports amounted to 9.1 billion KRW (2.3%), and domestic sales were 387.7 billion KRW, with domestic sales making up 97.7% of total sales.

When combining exports and domestic sales, meat processing and egg processing increased for three consecutive years, while dairy processing showed a steady decline.

Looking at export value alone, it decreased by 5.4 billion KRW (△37.2%) compared to the previous year. This is attributed to export restrictions due to COVID-19, changes in national dietary habits leading to reduced dining out, and increased consumption of 'home meal replacements.'

Meanwhile, the province is mandating the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification for dairy and egg processing industries, and is in the process of phased mandatory application for meat processing by December 1, 2024.
