'On the Day of the First Snowfall' Andong Station Moves to New Building... 90 Years of Old Station History Preserved The appearance of Andong Station in Songhyeon-dong.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Andong Station, which was established in 1931 as a hub in the northern Gyeongbuk region, will close its doors on the 17th after 90 years.

The new Andong Station, currently located in Unheung-dong, has already been constructed at 646-1 Songhyeon-dong, with a total floor area of 3,084㎡ in a two-story reinforced concrete structure. The parking lot can accommodate 137 vehicles.

Andong City plans to establish a convenient transfer system between Andong Terminal and the new Andong Station and will also discuss installing a sales center for Andong agricultural specialties within the new station.

Along with this, the double-track electrification project of the Jungang Line connecting Seoul Cheongnyangni and Gyeongbuk Yeongcheon will open the Cheongnyangni-Andong section on the 17th. Initially, existing conventional trains will operate on the newly opened rails, and the next-generation KTX 'Eum' EMU-260, which can run at a maximum speed of 260 km/h, is scheduled to make its debut in January next year.

Currently, trains operate using only a single track (down line), but by around October next year, when the Yeongju-Punggi section is completed, double-track operation is expected to be possible.

The KTX 'Eum' EMU-260 consists of 6 cars per train set (a total of 381 seats) and can reach Cheongnyangni from Andong within 2 hours and 10 minutes. Departing from Andong Station, it stops at a total of 10 stations including Yeongju, Punggi, Danyang, Jecheon, Wonju, Manjong, Donghwa, Yangdong, Gipyeong, and Yongmun, before arriving at Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul.

As a result, the Gyeongbuk region including Andong is expected to rapidly emerge as a day-trip tourism zone from the metropolitan area, anticipating explosive growth in tourism demand.

Andong City estimates that the daily boarding and alighting passengers will total 10,035, with 4,977 on the up line (Yeongcheon to Danyang) and 5,058 on the down line (Danyang to Yeongcheon). The city explains that it will become a genuine transportation hub capable of serving approximately 3.6 million passengers annually.

Mayor Kwon Young-se of Andong emphasized, "The number of railway users, which sharply declined after the opening of the Jungang Expressway in December 2001, is expected to return to the train station with the opening of the high-speed rail. We will further promote Andong as a tourism hub centered on the metropolitan area and make every effort to create a convenient and comfortable tourism reception system."
