[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, is reported to have mentioned the creation of a 'new party' as one of the innovation measures for the opposition.
On the 6th, during a closed-door meeting at the People’s Future Forum seminar, a joint research group of People Power Party and People’s Party lawmakers, Ahn responded to a question about "the specific direction and nature of the innovation platform" by mentioning this.
On that day, Ahn proposed opposition reorganization and the establishment of a new innovation platform as key strategies for regime change. He said, "90% of the 2030 generation are not interested in politics. The bigger problem is that the unfavorable sentiment toward the opposition, including the main opposition party, is extremely high. If there has been no change in public opinion despite five months of effort, we need to find another way. Using the same methods now, even the Seoul mayoral election has low chances of winning."
Ahn stated, "The only conclusion is opposition reorganization. It means showing a completely different image. If we create a new innovation platform and talk about Korea’s future along with concrete visions and policies, the public will take interest. We can build a foundation that includes not only centrists but also progressives who desire reasonable reform." He added, "If it takes the form of an anti-Moon alliance, it will become the same battle pattern as the last general election. No political force has ever won by opposing someone."
Ahn has previously founded four parties: the New Politics Alliance for Democracy, the People’s Party, the Bareunmirae Party, and currently the People’s Party.
On the 7th, Jeong Cheong-rae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, commented on Facebook regarding Ahn’s mention of opposition reorganization, saying, "Like a peddler who has nothing to sell or buy but always dresses up to go to the market on market day, these people habitually suffer from election fever only during elections," and added, "It’s really unfortunate."
