Jeong Jeong-sun: "Prosecution hides behind arrest warrant, remains silent... Will calmly follow procedural law"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] On the 27th, Jeong Jeong-sun, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, against whom a motion for arrest consent was submitted on charges including accounting fraud in the April 15 general election, stated, “The prosecution made it appear as if I am hiding behind the parliamentary immunity from arrest,” and clearly said she would follow procedural law.

On the same day in the afternoon, Rep. Jeong said in a statement, “The prosecution leaked unconfirmed allegations to the media in real time, undermining the suspect’s right to defense.”

She sharply criticized, “The prosecution’s immoral behavior of deliberately remaining silent behind a flawed request for consent to arrest has already entered politics.” She added, “The time has already come to consider what measures can make a group that behaves immorally act less immorally.”

She further emphasized, “I am merely walking the ‘untrodden path’ on behalf of 300 fellow lawmakers of the Republic of Korea against the arrogance that deceives the National Assembly and the exercise of power that annihilates an individual’s dignity,” and stressed, “I will calmly follow procedural law.” This effectively revealed her intention not to voluntarily appear before the prosecution.

Rep. Jeong also added, “Regardless of right or wrong, I deeply apologize for causing concern to the people.”

Earlier, the Democratic Party held a party meeting on the same day to discuss matters related to Rep. Jeong. Park Sung-jun, the Democratic Party’s floor spokesperson, told reporters after the meeting, “Rep. Jeong made a personal statement during the meeting. She apologized for burdening the party and said that the prosecution’s arrest warrant was wrong, expressing that she chose a difficult and untrodden path.”

If Rep. Jeong does not voluntarily appear, the Democratic Party plans to report the motion for arrest consent at the plenary session held after the budget correction speech on the 28th. The motion must be voted on within 72 hours after 24 hours from the report. The Democratic Party plans to convene a ‘one-point plenary session’ on the 30th to deliberate and decide on the motion for arrest consent.
