Installation of Sky Awning in Namseong Sakae Market Summer Path Section with 5m Width, 60m Length, and 6m Height... Expected Increase in Market Sales by Creating a Comfortable Shopping Environment Less Affected by Weather Conditions Like Snow and Rain
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Chang-woo Lee) will install design public awnings (sky awnings) in the summer street section of Namseong Sagye Market by the end of this month to prevent accident risks during rain and to improve convenience for market users.
Namseong Sagye Market is a representative traditional market in the district with an average daily foot traffic of 15,600 residents and visitors, currently housing over 140 stores.
The market is divided into four seasonal streets?spring, summer, autumn, and winter?based on the types of goods handled. Among them, the summer street is a congested section concentrated with first food stores (agricultural, livestock, and fishery products, processed foods), where individual store facilities such as awnings have caused inconvenience in passage and posed safety risks.
To address these issues, the district will install sky awnings (design public awnings) measuring 5 meters in width, 60 meters in length, and 6 meters in height along the summer street section (Dongjak-daero 29-gil 24 to Dongjak-daero 29-na-gil 10) as part of the Namseong Sagye Market cultural tourism project by the end of this month.
To secure market competitiveness by establishing Namseong Sagye Market as a landmark, the district plans to utilize its own brand and characters (Bomi, Yeoreumi, Gaeuli, Gyeouri) in the sky awning design.
The district expects that the installation of the sky awnings will create a comfortable shopping environment less affected by weather conditions such as snow and rain, attracting new customers in their 30s and 40s and increasing market sales.
Additionally, by the end of the year, a flat-type public parking lot with a total of 23 spaces will be created at Namseong Sagye Market to resolve residents' inconvenience caused by illegal parking around the market and to revitalize the local commercial district.
In particular, parking spaces for the disabled and female drivers, as well as spaces suitable for various vehicle types such as compact cars and SUVs, will be secured. The parking lot will be opened as an unmanned hourly public parking lot equipped with ▲parking control and CCTV surveillance systems ▲drainage facilities and other safety features.
Kim Jung-won, Director of the Economic Promotion Division, said, “The installation of the sky awnings will greatly improve the shopping environment of Namseong Sagye Market,” adding, “We will strive to develop policies to alleviate the economic difficulties of small business owners caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.”
