Launch of Online Platform Policy Forum... Mid- to Long-Term Policies to Be Announced

[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has formed the 'Online Platform Policy Forum' to discuss measures for the healthy development of the platform ecosystem and held its first meeting on the 25th.

The policy forum was established to discuss related issues and gather opinions from experts and stakeholders as the importance of the platform economy has accelerated across all sectors following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The forum will analyze domestic and international policy trends related to platforms and present key policy agendas such as fairness and transparency, playing a role in supporting the establishment and execution of the government's mid- to long-term platform policy directions.

For efficient discussions, the forum will have a total of four specialized subcommittees, each focusing on ▲analysis of the platform ecosystem ▲fairness and transparency of services ▲innovation creation through platform data utilization ▲mutual cooperation with startups and ventures.

At the first meeting, expert presentations were made on the topics of ▲the role of platforms in the digital economy (Senior Research Fellow Choi Gye-young, KISDI), ▲platform-related overseas policy trends including the EU (CEO Jo Dae-geun, Inca Research & Consulting), and ▲big data and digital platform development (Professor Jeon Ju-yong, Dongguk University).

Jang Seok-young, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “As major countries such as the EU are publicly preparing new platform strategy alternatives, it is now time for us to respond in earnest. We have launched this forum today to establish a balanced environment for the activation of online platforms and optimal competition,” adding, “Based on the forum’s outcomes, we plan to collaborate with related ministries to propose a whole-of-government policy plan that enables the platform ecosystem to develop healthily.”
