[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] The Myeongdong Urban Maintenance-type Redevelopment Zone District 2 in Jung-gu, Seoul, where Hyangrin Church and Boseung Building are located, will be redeveloped by preserving part of the buildings and creating spaces and paths that reinterpret historical and locational significance.
On the 2nd, Seoul City held the 12th Urban Planning Committee meeting and announced on the 3rd that it had approved the amended plan for the maintenance plan decision (change) of Myeongdong Urban Maintenance-type Redevelopment Zone District 2 in Jung-gu.
The Myeongdong Urban Maintenance-type Redevelopment Zone District 2 in Euljiro 2-ga 163-3 area, Jung-gu, was designated as a redevelopment zone in September 1983. It remains the only unimplemented district to date, and due to changes in surrounding conditions and higher-level plan revisions, a maintenance plan decision (change) is necessary to restore urban functions and improve the urban environment.
Through this urban planning committee, the amended maintenance plan decision (change) including preservation plans for the historical and cultural resources Hyangrin Church and Boseung Building within the target area was approved.
Along with preserving some physical and morphological elements of modern and contemporary architecture, 'cultural community spaces, historical record spaces, and rest areas' that reinterpret historical and locational significance will be established, and a historical and cultural walking path connecting Euljiro (Euljiro Underground Shopping Center) - memory recreation spaces (Hyangrin Church, Boseung Building) - cultural park, and Myeongdong Cathedral will be created.
The city stated, "Once the infrastructure such as roads and parks within the Myeongdong area is completed, it is expected that a community space that remembers and shares the new democratization history of the Myeongdong area will be created."
