Research on 3D Personalized Knee Analysis and Customized Surgery Technology

Cellumed, Jeju National University Hospital Conduct Clinical Trial for Patient-Customized Knee Prosthesis

[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] Cellumed is targeting overseas medical tourism demand by partnering with Jeju National University Hospital.

On the 28th, Cellumed announced that it will conduct a clinical study on "Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Patient-Specific Surgical Instruments Applied with 3D Printing Technology" together with the orthopedic surgery team at Jeju National University Hospital.

This study involves 3D reconstruction of the knees of patients with degenerative arthritis, followed by biomechanical analysis of minimal bone resection and optimal implant positioning. Through this, the surgical process is shortened and the patient's knee joint is accurately restored. Patient-specific knee implants have the advantage of understanding the unique characteristics of each patient, enabling ▲ minimal bone resection and skin incision ▲ precise surgery using 3D patient-specific surgical instruments ▲ reduced surgery time and minimized complications and side effects.

A Cellumed official stated, "Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeju Island saw an annual increase in foreign tourists mainly from China and Southeast Asia, and it is the region with the most developed medical tourism infrastructure in Korea. The clinical study on patient-specific total knee arthroplasty to secure competitiveness in medical tourism will not only advance robot-assisted surgery but also, combined with Jeju Island’s medical tourism resources, help Jeju emerge as an Asian medical and tourism hub after COVID-19."
