"India, China Smartphone Boycott Impact... Samsung Electronics Expected to Benefit"

IDC and Counterpoint Detect Slowdown in China Smartphone Sales

[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] As India's boycott of Chinese goods expands, opinions have emerged that Samsung Electronics and related component companies are expected to benefit.

According to smartphone market research firms IDC and Counterpoint on the 4th, it is reported that the sales of Chinese smartphone companies have slowed down in India due to the boycott of Chinese products and import restrictions on Chinese components.

Since the clash between Indian and Chinese troops near the India border (Ladakh region), the boycott of Chinese products in India has been expanding. Chinese goods imported into India are also classified as subjects of a full inspection, so smartphone components are unable to be shipped and are stuck at the distribution channels.

Accordingly, Chinese smartphone companies sourcing smartphone components from China are inevitably facing production disruptions. Since specific schedules have not been confirmed, production uncertainty is expected to increase further.

Lee Kyu-ha, a researcher at NH Investment & Securities, said, “Smartphone companies that are not Chinese companies such as Samsung Electronics and Apple are less affected,” and added, “Overall benefits are expected for domestic component companies including Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics.”

It is also positive that Samsung Electronics is only offering price discounts on its main models in India. Recently, Samsung Electronics has been selling its main models, the A51 and A31 series, at a 9-11% discount in India. Researcher Lee Kyu-ha explained, “It is highly likely that Samsung will enjoy the reflective benefits of the boycott of Chinese products in India starting from June,” and added, “If India’s import restrictions on Chinese goods and the boycott continue in the second half of the year, the possibility of additional benefits will increase, which is positive for Samsung Electronics and related component companies.”
