Spain Extends National Emergency Until the 26th as COVID-19 Death Toll Surpasses 11,000

According to the Spanish Ministry of Health's tally on the 4th (local time), the number of COVID-19 deaths reached 11,744, an increase of 809 from the previous day.

However, Spain's daily death toll peaked at 950 on the 2nd, then decreased to 932 on the 3rd, and further dropped to the 800s on this day.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases was recorded at 124,736, an increase of 7,026 from the previous day.

Spain is considered the country with the widest spread of COVID-19 in Europe, surpassing Italy in terms of confirmed cases.

Accordingly, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez decided to extend the national state of emergency until the 26th through a COVID-19 task force (TF) meeting and a meeting with opposition leaders on the same day. This decision was made as strengthened measures, including stricter movement restrictions and a ban on commuting to all non-essential workplaces, were judged to have been effective in slowing the spread of COVID-19.

Therefore, Prime Minister Sanchez plans to submit the related agenda to the parliament.
