President Moon Jae-in, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin, and Director Jeong Eun-kyeong of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency Talk... "Daegu's Difficult Situation Requires Strong Measures"
[Asia Economy reporters Ryu Jeong-min and Son Seon-hee] On the 20th, President Moon Jae-in, during a phone call with Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin, said, "I extend my condolences to the citizens of Daegu who are facing difficulties," and added, "I hope for an early resolution, and until then, I will share concerns with you and the Daegu city government."
When Mayor Kwon explained the difficulties faced by Daegu, President Moon said, "I will take good care of it. It seems the citizens of Daegu are anxious. As the number of confirmed cases is rapidly increasing in Daegu, please let us know anytime if support from the central government and quarantine measures are needed."
In a phone call with Jung Eun-kyung, head of the Central Disease Control Headquarters (Director of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency), President Moon said, "You have worked so hard that I have deliberately refrained from calling until now. Daegu is in a difficult situation, so I hope you communicate with Daegu city and utilize military medical facilities or all available measures such as masks."
President Moon said, "Daegu city will take measures such as closing the Shincheonji Church, but stronger measures may be necessary. Please show prompt response to Daegu's issues so that such measures can be implemented quickly." President Moon added, "If strong measures are needed, please contact me anytime. Thank you for your continuous efforts."
A Blue House official explained regarding the content of the strong measures, "There are many problems Daegu is struggling with," and added, "Isn't the current situation a shortage of negative pressure wards? It seems these measures include quickly increasing such facilities."
Spokesperson Kang said, "What President Moon emphasized is ultimately close communication between the central government and local governments," and added, "Another point is that he ordered prompt measures and swift responses."
Meanwhile, when Director Jung responded humbly, President Moon said, "I believe the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency deserves credit for the good response so far," and added, "How to respond to new developments has become a new challenge. However, I trust you will do well. Please convey my encouragement to the KDCA staff as well."
