US Ambassador Harris Congratulates Bong Joon-ho While Eating 'Jjapaguri'

Harry Harris, the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, celebrated the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay won by the film Parasite on the 10th while eating "Jjapaguri." In the movie Parasite, there is a scene where Jjapaguri, a dish made by mixing Chapagetti and Neoguri instant noodles and topping it with Korean beef, is eaten, and Ambassador Harris imitated this.

On the same day, Ambassador Harris tweeted, "Enjoying an Oscar viewing party with embassy colleagues while eating 'Jjapaguri,'" and added, "Congratulations to director Bong Joon-ho for winning the first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for a Korean film. Looking forward to more wins."

Meanwhile, the film Parasite achieved the historic feat of being the first Korean film to win an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Director Bong Joon-ho and writer Han Jin-won were announced as the winners of the screenplay award at the 92nd Academy Awards held on the 9th (local time) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, USA.

This is the first time in the 101-year history of the Academy Awards that a Korean film has won. It is also the first time in Oscar history that an Asian writer has won the screenplay award with Parasite. As a foreign language film, it is the first win in 17 years since Spanish director Pedro Almod?var's Talk to Her in 2003.

Parasite won the screenplay award, beating strong contenders such as Knives Out (Rian Johnson), Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach), 1917 (Sam Mendes), and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

Director Bong took the stage that day and said, "Thank you. It is a great honor. Writing a screenplay is actually a lonely and solitary task. I am not writing on behalf of a country, but this award is the first Oscar that Korea has received." Then, raising the trophy, he expressed his gratitude, saying, "I thank my wife, who always gives me much inspiration, and the Parasite actors who wonderfully brought the script to the screen."
