Environmental Movement Federation Demands Verification of Top Supporters for Four Major Rivers Project Controversy

"Monitoring the Verification of B Preliminary Candidate of the Deobureo Minjudang"

Environmental Movement Federation Demands Verification of Top Supporters for Four Major Rivers Project Controversy

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Ki-dong] The Jeonnam Environmental Movement Federation and the Gwangju Environmental Movement Federation (hereinafter referred to as the Environmental Movement Federation) have demanded that the Democratic Party of Korea verify candidates who supported the Four Major Rivers Project, a representative corrupt project, among the preliminary candidates running in the 21st general election.

On the 28th, the Environmental Movement Federation issued a statement, announcing that one of the 108 people selected as "Grade A social figures supporting the Four Major Rivers Project" in 2011 is running in the Mokpo City electoral district for the 21st National Assembly general election, and stated on the 29th that they will observe the Democratic Party of Korea's verification process.

In the statement, they identified candidate B as a Grade A supporter of the Four Major Rivers Project, pointing out that he was the head of the National Statistical Office and former planning director of the Green Growth Committee, and a key figure who led the nationwide river destruction plan.

They continued, "The Four Major Rivers Project, which continued from the Lee Myung-bak to the Park Geun-hye administrations, was the epitome of corruption. It dug up perfectly fine rivers and blocked their flow, wasting the people's tax money entirely," adding, "Although the Moon Jae-in administration's water management unification policy has been established and is being implemented, the Four Major Rivers nationwide are still suffering."

In particular, they demanded, "At this point in time, we want to ask candidate B what he truly thinks about the Four Major Rivers Project. We will watch how the Democratic Party of Korea verifies Grade A supporters of the Four Major Rivers Project."

The Environmental Movement Federation stated, "The 21st general election is just three months away," and added, "Despite the cold winter weather, the people held candles in the heart of Seoul's Gwanghwamun and in major cities nationwide, ultimately leading to the inauguration of the Moon Jae-in government, which received the mandate of the candlelight protests."

Finally, they appealed, "In the second half of the Moon Jae-in administration, the people earnestly hope for clear reforms beyond just clearing out corruption," and emphasized, "The 21st general election must produce candidates who can carry out clear reforms."
