KOSPI Closes Above 2260, Up Over 1% on Institutional Net Buying... KOSDAQ Recovers to 680 Level [Image source=Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] The KOSPI closed above the 2260 level, rising more than 1% thanks to net buying by institutional investors. The KOSDAQ index also recovered to the 680 level, rising nearly 2%.


On the 22nd, the KOSPI, which started lower, turned to an upward trend early in the session and gradually increased its gains. Around 2:30 PM, it rose nearly 1%, reclaiming the 2260 level, and closed at 2267.25, up 27.56 points (1.23%) from the previous day.


Looking at trading trends by participant, institutional investors led the index rise with net purchases of 287.6 billion KRW. In contrast, individual and foreign investors net sold 214.1 billion KRW and 75.5 billion KRW, respectively.


By sector, paper and wood (4.94%), transportation equipment (3.29%), and pharmaceuticals (2.64%) rose, while steel and metals (-0.59%), insurance (-0.51%), and banking (-0.43%) declined.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, Hyundai Motor, which surpassed 100 trillion KRW in sales, surged 8.55%. Samsung SDI (3.81%), Samsung Biologics (3.20%), Celltrion (2.32%), and NAVER (2.20%) also rose, while POSCO (-1.20%) and Shinhan Financial Group (-0.97%) fell.


On the day, 539 stocks rose in the KOSPI market, including two stocks hitting the upper price limit, while 282 stocks fell with no stocks hitting the lower price limit. 88 stocks remained unchanged.


The KOSDAQ index also closed up nearly 2%, driven by net buying from foreign and institutional investors. The KOSDAQ, which started higher, steadily expanded its gains during the session and closed at 688.25, up 11.73 points (1.73%) from the previous trading day.


By participant, foreign and institutional investors net bought 67.5 billion KRW and 73.1 billion KRW, respectively, supporting the index, while individual investors net sold 129 billion KRW.


By sector, distribution (2.95%), pharmaceuticals (2.92%), semiconductors (2.40%), and transportation equipment and parts (2.08%) rose.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, most rose. Hugel surged nearly 10% at 9.64%, and Celltrion Healthcare (4.94%), Studio Dragon (4.47%), Wonik IPS (3.25%), Soulbrain (3.21%), and Medison (2.74%) also increased.


In the KOSDAQ market on the day, 902 stocks rose, including two stocks hitting the upper price limit, while 351 stocks fell with no stocks hitting the lower price limit. 94 stocks remained unchanged.
