The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran, which has been blocking the Strait of Hormuz in response to attacks by the United States and Israel, announced on March 2 (local time) that it would attack vessels attempting to pass through the strait.
According to TASS news agency, Major General Ebrahim Jabari, an advisor to the IRGC commander, told Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency on this day, "We will set fire to any vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz," adding, "Not a single drop of oil will be allowed to leave this region."
The IRGC began blocking the Strait of Hormuz immediately after the United States and Israel attacked Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical strategic chokepoint known as the "global energy artery," as it handles about 20% of the world's maritime oil shipments. Since it is a key sea route for oil and gas exports from Middle Eastern oil-producing countries to Asia, Europe, and other regions, any disruption to maritime transport here is expected to make it difficult to avoid instability in oil supply and sharp increases in prices.
