"Investigating How the Virtual Assets Were Leaked"
The police have arrested a suspect who siphoned off virtual assets that had been held in custody in connection with a crime.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency announced on the 25th that it had booked two people, including a man in his 40s identified as A, on charges of violating the Information and Communications Network Act. A and the others are accused of leaking virtual assets that were being held by the police.
The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul recently discovered that 22 Bitcoins, which had been voluntarily submitted in November 2021 in connection with a crime, had been leaked externally. It was reported that the cold wallet (offline electronic wallet), which was in the form of a USB portable electronic device, remained intact, but only the Bitcoins stored inside had disappeared.
The National Police Agency began checking the status of virtual assets under police management after a case became public last month in which 320 Bitcoins worth about 31.2 billion won that had been seized by the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office went missing, and during this process the loss was confirmed.
A police official said, "We are currently investigating how the virtual assets were leaked and other related circumstances."
