Mokpo-si in Jeollanam-do has begun full-scale promotion of the construction project for the Mokpo Christian Modern History Museum, moving forward with the creation of a religious tourism hub in the southwestern region.
The city announced that on the 23rd it held a kickoff meeting for the service to design the interior exhibition space of the museum and to produce and install the exhibits. During the meeting, participants shared the exhibition direction and composition plan, and collected opinions to enhance the completeness of the content.
Mokpo is the third region in the country where an American Southern Presbyterian mission was established, following Jeonju and Gunsan in 1898, and it is a city that holds symbolic significance in the history of Korea's modern era and Christian missions. Based on this historical background, the city has been promoting the creation of a specialized cultural space embodying local identity since 2022.
The museum will be built in the area of 93-8, Bukgyo-dong, with a total project cost of 10.22 billion won. Funding will come from national, provincial, and municipal budgets, as well as private resources from the Mokpo Christian Modern History Memorial Association.
The facility will consist of one basement floor and four above-ground floors (site area of 949 square meters, total floor area of 1,584.17 square meters) and will house a complex cultural space including exhibition rooms, a media art room, an experience room, storage, a museum shop, and a cafe.
The city plans to refine the exhibition content by reflecting the opinions presented at the kickoff meeting, and to develop the facility beyond a simple exhibition venue into a cultural hub that simultaneously highlights local modern history, religious culture, and urban identity.
Acting Mayor of Mokpo, Cho Seokhoon, said, "We will do our utmost to promote this project so that the Mokpo Christian Modern History Museum can shed new light on the region's historical value and establish itself as a differentiated cultural tourism asset."
Meanwhile, the city plans to conduct a construction company bidding process in April, sign the construction contract in May, and then begin full-scale construction work.
