The Damyang Regional Self-Sufficiency Center, a haven that supports the independence and growth of vulnerable residents in Damyang County, Jeollanam-do, has ended its time in an old rented space and moved into a new building.

Damyang County announced that on February 24 it held an opening ceremony for the newly built Damyang Regional Self-Sufficiency Center, a space dedicated to self-sufficiency projects. Around 100 people attended the event, including Damyang County Governor Jeong Cheolwon, the chair of the county council, provincial and county council members, and participants in self-sufficiency work programs, to celebrate this new beginning.

Established in 2003, the Damyang Regional Self-Sufficiency Center had been operating its project groups from several scattered locations, and since 2020 it had been using a county-owned building on a rent-free basis. However, due to the aging facilities, there had been persistent calls to improve the working environment.

In response, Damyang County applied for and was finally selected for the new self-sufficiency center construction project run by the Korea Self-Sufficiency Development Institute in 2023, and has now completed a pleasant, dedicated two-story building. The first floor of the new center houses workshops, a lounge, and a laundry room, while the second floor includes an auditorium, counseling rooms, and staff offices.

The new building currently accommodates the Hospital Companion Project Group and the cleaning service group "Good Clean Project Group," both of which are actively operating there. In addition, a total of seven project groups are providing stable jobs to 67 people who are basic livelihood security recipients or near-poverty residents, including the external cafe "Cheongchuleoram," the lunch box project group "Yumi's Lunch Box," the home appliance assembly group "Saetbyeol Irum Project Group," and the waste furniture repair group "Saehwalyong Project Group."

The county is not only providing jobs but is also supporting the acquisition of certifications and offering asset-building programs to strengthen participants' capabilities for employment and start-ups, thereby helping them achieve stable self-reliance.

An official from the county said, "We hope that the opening of this new building will offer new hope to those in need and serve as a solid stepping stone toward a more self-directed life," adding, "We will continue to actively support the empowerment of self-sufficiency participants."
