Jeonnam Province announced that transaction volume in the online wholesale market for agricultural products in 2025 reached 69.2 billion won, a 24.2% increase from the previous year’s 55.7 billion won.
By item, transaction volume was led by rice at 20.2 billion won, followed by onions at 18.8 billion won and cherry tomatoes at 14.8 billion won. It was analyzed that agricultural products from Jeonnam have demonstrated strong competitiveness even in the online market, driving the expansion of transactions.
The online wholesale market converts the traditional offline wholesale trading method into a digital format, allowing sellers and buyers to trade 24 hours a day without time or space constraints. Currently, the main traded items are 202 categories, including fresh produce, grains, livestock products, and domestically produced processed foods.
To vitalize the online wholesale market, Jeonnam Province has focused on encouraging participation from production areas. For companies that ship products through the online wholesale market, the province is providing subsidies of 70% of freight costs (up to 500,000 won), within an annual limit of 10 million won per company.
To help the market take root, the province held two roundtable meetings with distribution companies in production areas in March and September last year, and strengthened on-site support by conducting a total of five joint on-site consulting visits with the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT).
A distribution company in Hampyeong reported that, by participating in the online wholesale market, farm-gate prices received by farmers rose by 3.5%, distribution costs were reduced by 7.4%, and transaction fees decreased by 2.4%.
Since online wholesale market performance accounts for 20% of the comprehensive evaluation of distribution in production areas, Jeonnam Province is actively guiding stakeholders to participate.
Park Sangmi, Director of the Agro-Food Distribution Division of Jeonnam Province, said, “The expansion of direct transactions from production areas through the online wholesale market and the improvement of distribution efficiency have led to higher performance,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen support to increase farm household income and expand sales channels.”
