"Stopping Repeated Flooding"... Gyeongju Hyeongok Lawon District Drainage Improvement Project in Full Swing

Nos. 3 and 4 Pumping Stations Aimed to Be Operational by Year-End... Preparations Underway to Begin Construction on Nos. 1 and 2

Gyeongju City announced on February 24 that it is promoting a drainage improvement project in the Lawon-ri area of Hyeongok-myeon.

This area has repeatedly suffered farmland flooding whenever the water level of the Hyeongsan River rose due to typhoons and heavy rainfall.

The project was launched in 2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The total project cost is 15.8 billion won, including 12.6 billion won from the national government and 3.2 billion won from the city budget.

For implementation of the 2026 program, an additional 7.2 billion won has been allocated, consisting of 6.7 billion won in national funds and 500 million won in city funds.

The main focus is to expand drainage facilities. Four drainage pumping stations (two in Lawon and two in Cheongnyeong) and two water gates will be installed.

The city will also improve drainage channels and raise 2.3 hectares of low-lying land by an average of 0.4 meters.

Through this project, the city plans to block backflow caused by rising water levels in the Hyeongsan River and reduce flood damage that has occurred during heavy rainfall.

The project is being carried out in stages.

After obtaining approval for the implementation plan in March 2024, the city placed construction orders and, in June of the same year, began work by commissioning the Gyeongju Branch of the Korea Rural Community Corporation.

In November 2024, it completed land use negotiations for the No. 3 and No. 4 drainage pumping stations and commenced construction.

Administrative procedures are underway to enable the early start of construction on the No. 1 and No. 2 drainage pumping stations as well.

The No. 3 and No. 4 drainage pumping stations are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nakyoung stressed, "The Lawon District is an area where farmland flooding has been repeated whenever there is heavy rainfall," adding, "We will swiftly expand drainage facilities to prevent disasters and establish a stable foundation for farming."
