First Applied for 150 Days
Following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling invalidating his tariffs, U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly unveiled “10% global tariff,” based on Section 122 of the Trade Act, took effect at 12:01 a.m. on the 24th (local time), which was 2:01 p.m. on February 24, 2026, Korea time.
According to U.S. broadcaster NBC and the UK’s Financial Times (FT), President Trump’s new global tariff has been applied from that time. President Trump has stated that he will raise this to 15%, but the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has notified importers that a 10% tariff will first be applied for 150 days, these outlets reported. The White House also confirmed that the initial rate is indeed 10%, and that the increase to 15% will be pursued through a separate executive order.
After the Supreme Court’s ruling, President Trump immediately announced that, based on Section 122 of the Trade Act, he would apply a 10% tariff rate to all countries. The next day, he said the rate would be raised to 15%. At the same time, he initiated tariff investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act and Section 301 of the Trade Act. In effect, he activated a “Plan B” in response to the ruling.
On this day, President Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “Countries that try to ‘play games’ by exploiting the Supreme Court’s ridiculous decision, especially those that have been ‘ripping off’ the United States for decades, will face tariffs that are far higher and harsher than what was recently agreed.” He also cited the Latin-derived maxim “Buyer Beware,” making it clear that, when the U.S. government imposes retaliatory tariffs in the future, responsibility will lie with the other countries.
