Police council blasts them for "trivializing a noble sacrifice as mere amusement"
Agency says it "failed to review the appropriateness of the expression... feels deeply responsible"
TV personality Jun Hyunmoo has bowed his head in apology after referring to the sacrifice of a police officer who died in the line of duty with a vulgar slang term.
His agency SM C&C released a statement on the 23rd, saying, "We failed to properly review the appropriateness of the expressions while editing the cast member's remarks," and added, "We feel a heavy sense of responsibility for having caused pain to the deceased and the bereaved family." The agency went on to say, "We will establish strict internal standards and do our utmost to prevent any recurrence."
The controversy erupted in episode 2 of the Disney+ survival variety show "Fate Wars 49," which was released on the 11th. The production team presented a mission to guess the cause of death of the late Sergeant Lee Jaehyun, who died in the line of duty in 2004 after being attacked with a weapon. When a shaman appearing on the show said, "Isn't getting stabbed with a knife commonly called 'kal-ppang'?" Jun Hyunmoo, who was hosting, chimed in, "It's a uniformed officer getting 'kal-ppang.' That's a bit too direct, right?" In doing so, the production team and cast members reduced the noble death of the deceased to mere entertainment.
The National Police Workplace Council issued a statement the same day, strongly condemning them. It declared, "We express deep anger at this senseless behavior that disparaged the sacrifice of a public servant who died in the line of duty while apprehending a criminal and turned it into a source of amusement."
