Uijeongbu-si in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) held the final briefing for the "Uijeongbu-si Economic Free Zone Designation Promotion Project" at City Hall's Uijeong Hall on the 20th, where the city conducted a final review of its development plans and concrete implementation strategies for the designation of an economic free zone.
Uijeongbu-si held the final report meeting for the "Uijeongbu-si Economic Free Zone Designation Promotion Project" on the 20th at City Hall's Council Hall. Provided by Uijeongbu-si.
The city has been pushing for the designation of an economic free zone in order to flesh out its future growth strategy and its plan to leap forward as a self-sufficient city, focusing on the returned U.S. military base area. As a result, it was selected in April 2025 as a candidate site for additional designation as an economic free zone by Gyeonggi Province.
An economic free zone is a special economic zone where various tax benefits and deregulation incentives are applied to promote foreign investment and attract high-tech industries. In particular, it allows for the relaxation of industrial zone regulations applied to overpopulation control areas under the Capital Region Readjustment Planning Act, thereby helping to attract investment from global companies, create quality jobs, and revitalize the local economy.
Around 20 people attended this briefing, including experts in industrial and urban planning, officials from relevant departments, Uijeongbu Urban Corporation, and representatives from the project contractor. They focused on closely reviewing the differentiated development direction and implementation strategies of the Uijeongbu-si Economic Free Zone being promoted in the returned U.S. military base area.
An Uijeongbu-si official said, "Promoting the designation of an economic free zone is a key strategy to overcome the structural limitations of Uijeongbu-si, which has long been constrained by overlapping regulations, and to make a leap forward as a self-sufficient city," adding, "Based on what was discussed today, we will further refine and supplement the development plan so that the designation of the economic free zone can lead to tangible results."
Going forward, based on the details finalized at this final briefing, the city plans to work closely with Gyeonggi Province to fully launch the designation application process, while at the same time enhancing the completeness of the policy through strategic corporate attraction activities.
