Daegu Education Office to Provide In-Kind School Uniform Support of Up to 300,000 Won for 41,000 New Middle and High School Students

The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 23rd that it will provide 12.5 billion won in school uniform purchase support for approximately 41,000 new middle and high school students for the 2026 academic year, in order to reduce the burden of school uniform costs on parents.

Those eligible for support are first-year students who are newly enrolled in national, public, and private middle and high schools in Daegu, as well as first-year students transferring from other cities and provinces or from overseas. School uniforms will be provided in kind, up to a limit of 300,000 won per student.

If the school uniform purchase amount is less than 300,000 won, additional items such as gym uniforms, daily wear, or extra sets of school uniforms may be provided within the remaining amount, following consultation among school members.

Meanwhile, in relation to the recent controversy in some other cities and provinces over the burden of school uniform purchase costs, a survey conducted by the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education on schools within its jurisdiction found that the average school uniform purchase price for schools in the Daegu area for the 2025 academic year was 173,700 won for winter uniforms and 93,300 won for summer uniforms, and that there were no schools exceeding the uniform price ceiling.

This is the result of the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education preemptively introducing and expanding the operation of the "Good School Uniform" initiative from the 2019 academic year, which improved the convenience and mobility of school uniforms and rationalized prices. As of the 2025 academic year, the adoption rate of Good School Uniforms among middle and high schools in the jurisdiction reached 88.1%.

Going forward, the office plans to continue implementing practical measures to reduce the burden on parents, including actively encouraging the transition of formal suit-type uniforms to Good School Uniforms and inducing simplification of the items that students are required to purchase.

In addition, it plans to strengthen support by regularly inspecting each school's school uniform management status and reflecting parents' opinions so that price stability and quality maintenance can be achieved simultaneously.

Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eunhee said, "I hope that support for school uniform purchase costs will go beyond simple budget assistance and lead to a tangible reduction in the burden that parents feel," adding, "We will provide active support so that the Good School Uniform initiative can take root in schools and achieve both price stability and quality improvement."
