Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province will fully implement a fire damage support program to help stabilize the lives of residents who have lost their homes due to residential fires.
Gwangju City begins full-scale implementation of the fire damage support program. Provided by Gwangju City, Gyeonggi Province.
The city announced on the 23rd that it will enforce the "Gwangju City Ordinance on Support for Residents Affected by Fire" starting January 1, 2026, and will begin providing practical assistance for the recovery of daily life to residents who are not covered by fire insurance.
Until now, households without fire insurance received little public assistance when a fire occurred, resulting in a heavy financial burden. With the enactment of this ordinance, an institutional foundation has been established to enable affected residents to quickly return to their daily lives.
The support is available to residents who are registered as residents of Gwangju City and actually reside there, and who have suffered damage due to a residential fire. However, those who are covered by fire insurance are excluded to prevent duplicate support.
The support includes fire damage relief funds of up to 5 million won, temporary accommodation costs such as lodging and meals (up to 10 days), and disaster psychological counseling. The amount of relief funds is determined according to the scale of the fire recorded in the fire certificate issued by the fire station, and the city has established a comprehensive support system that goes beyond simple cash assistance to include housing and psychological recovery.
Applications can be submitted within 30 days from the date of the fire at the Community Service Centers (Eup, Myeon, and Dong offices) in the applicant's place of residence, and the relief funds will be paid after the damage has been verified.
Mayor Bang Sehwan said, "A sudden fire is a major disaster directly linked to people's livelihoods, so the administration must serve as a minimum safety net," adding, "We will actively promote the program so that no affected resident misses out on support simply because they are unaware of the system."
Meanwhile, the city plans to strengthen public information on the program through the city hall website, social media, village broadcasting, banners, and media outreach.
