U.S. Trade Representative: "Trump-Xi Summit Will Be Successful Despite Tariff Ruling"

Representative Jamison Greer, Interview with Fox News
U.S.-China Summit in April to Proceed as Planned

U.S. Trade Representative: "Trump-Xi Summit Will Be Successful Despite Tariff Ruling" Jamison Greer, Representative at the United States Trade Representative (USTR)

Greer Jamison, Representative, United States Trade Representative (USTR), said on the 22nd (local time) that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs were illegal would not affect the U.S.-China summit scheduled to take place between late March and early April.

In an interview with Fox News that day, when asked whether the U.S. position at the U.S.-China summit would be undermined because the Supreme Court’s ruling on the illegality of reciprocal tariffs had weakened Washington’s negotiating leverage over Beijing, Representative Jamison said, "The April summit will go ahead as planned and will be very successful."

Representative Jamison stressed, "We have been imposing tariffs on China since 2018, and the current average tariff rate on China is about 40%, and we also have other tools we can use if necessary."

He added, "The key is not that we are trying to fight with China," and that it is about "securing stability for soybean farmers (in the United States), for those who are selling aircraft and medical devices (to China), and for those who are trying to import goods that cannot be obtained anywhere other than China."

Representative Jamison also said of the goal of the U.S.-China summit, "First of all, we want to make sure that China continues to purchase the goods it has promised and that it is fulfilling its obligations under the agreement, including whether it continues to supply us with rare earths."

He went on to say, "This summit will proceed in terms of maintaining stability, monitoring implementation of the agreements, and building the relationship for the future."
