According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 20th, GPAI is a multi-stakeholder initiative that, based on the OECD AI Principles, supports the development and use of safe and trustworthy AI. This year, South Korea is serving as a co-chair country together with Singapore.
At this meeting, participants discussed GPAI’s key work for this year and the AI policy directions of each country. Deputy Prime Minister Bae stressed, “Artificial intelligence is a core driver reshaping the entire economy and society, and it must move beyond discussions of potential toward responsible use and the creation of tangible outcomes.” He went on to present South Korea’s efforts to expand AI computing infrastructure and foster data and talent. Participants shared the view that it is important to enhance the accountability of AI systems, secure computing infrastructure in a stable manner, and strengthen policy implementation capacity.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Bae held talks with the Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-Charge of Smart Nation and Cybersecurity of Singapore, and with the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology of India, to discuss ways of strengthening intergovernmental cooperation on AI. In a separate meeting with Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy of the United States, he shared the AI policy directions being pursued by both countries and discussed in concrete terms how to implement the Korea-U.S. Technology Alliance for Economic Prosperity, which was concluded on the occasion of the APEC Summit in Gyeongju last year.
