Former 707th Special Mission Group Commander Kim Hyuntae Accompanies Him
Placard Reads "Jayu Hangildan (Freedom Hangil Group)"...Dismissed on January 29
The identity of the man wearing sunglasses and holding a placard next to YouTuber Jeon Hangil, a former Korean history lecturer who appeared at Dongjak Police Station the previous day on charges including defamation of President Lee Jaemyung, has drawn attention. He is none other than former 707th Special Mission Group Commander Kim Hyuntae, who was dismissed at the time of the December 3 Martial Law.
On February 12 at 10 a.m., the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Criminal Mobile Unit summoned Jeon as a suspect and questioned him on charges of defamation by stating false facts under the Information and Communications Network Act. This is the first time Jeon has been summoned and questioned in connection with these allegations.
When Jeon appeared at Dongjak Police Station, former special mission commander Kim Hyuntae stood next to him wearing sunglasses and holding a placard that read “Jayu Hangildan (Freedom Hangil Group).” Earlier, after former President Yoon Sukyeol declared martial law, Kim had revealed his face and name, held a press conference, and insisted that “the 707 unit members are victims who were used by former Defense Minister Kim Yonghyun.”
However, on January 29 he was dismissed on charges of leading troops and infiltrating the National Assembly. After that, he appeared on Jeon’s YouTube channel and embarked on a new course, making remarks such as “Soldiers are being brainwashed by left-leaning media” and “They asked the two-star generals whether martial law was treason or not, and only those who answered that it was treason were promoted.”
On February 3, Kim posted on his Facebook page that “The Democratic Party of Korea knew about the martial law in advance and responded” and that “Former President Yoon’s martial law was ‘legal.’” On the same day, during a live broadcast on Jeon’s YouTube channel, Kim also said, “I came to realize that President Yoon Sukyeol and Minister Kim Yonghyun made a truly important decision,” reiterating that “martial law was legal.”
Meanwhile, Jeon is accused of making remarks on his YouTube channel to the effect that “President Lee Jaemyung hid more than 1 trillion won in slush funds earned from the Daejang-dong development project in Singapore” and that “He has an out-of-wedlock child with Kim Hyunji, the First Presidential Secretary.” The Democratic Party of Korea’s National Communication Committee filed a complaint against Jeon last October on charges of violating Article 70, Paragraph 2 (defamation by stating false facts) of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc.
