From Cleaning Cheongnyangni Station to Goshiwon Meetings
"Leaving No Gaps in Holiday Safety Blind Spots"
On February 12, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, Lee Pilhyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District in Seoul, visited four locations in succession - Cheongnyangni Station Plaza, a construction site, a goshiwon, and a welfare facility for the homeless - to conduct on-site inspections as part of the district’s comprehensive Lunar New Year measures.
Lee Pilhyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, joined environmental officers to clean a bus stop near Cheongnyangni Station. Provided by Dongdaemun District Office.
In the morning, the mayor picked up a broom together with environmental officers and personally swept areas of Cheongnyangni Station Plaza and nearby back roads, alleyways, and walking paths that are difficult to keep maintained, collecting waste himself. The aim was to resolve environmental inconveniences in advance, given that foot traffic increases during the holiday period.
He then visited the construction site of the Dongdaemun Municipal Senior Welfare Center, which is being built on the former site of the old Cheongnyangni Psychiatric Hospital, and, together with external experts including geotechnical and foundation engineers and an architect, inspected the safety of temporary structures in the excavation site, fire prevention measures, winter working conditions, and whether safety equipment was being properly worn.
In the afternoon, he visited a goshiwon in the district, held a brief meeting with single-person households living there, and listened directly to their everyday inconveniences related to heating, hygiene, and safety. Mayor Lee guided them to local resources they can use, such as welfare centers, the Seoul Mind Convenience Store, and the Single-Person Household Support Center, encouraging them by saying, “Please try to go out more often and meet people.”
Lastly, he visited the Ghanaan Shelter, a welfare facility for the homeless, checked how its accommodations and cafeteria were being operated, and stressed that “support should not end with protection, but must lead to self-sufficiency and independence.” Mayor Lee said, “The safety of our residents is the top priority,” adding, “We will thoroughly address everyday inconveniences and blind spots in safety even during the holiday period.”
