Additional contract expected to boost revenue
HJ Heavy Industries announced on the 13th that officials from the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command requested an additional contract after visiting the company’s Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan.
HJ Heavy Industries is currently in charge of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) work for the U.S. Navy’s ship USNS Amelia Earhart and related projects. After signing a mid-term maintenance contract in December last year, the company began the work, with delivery scheduled for March this year.

On the previous day, six officials, including Jim Goodheart, Deputy Director of the Ship Management Office under the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC), and a Navy supervisor, visited HJ Heavy Industries’ Yeongdo Shipyard and were reportedly impressed by the company’s maintenance quality and technological capabilities.
They also asked the company to make every effort in carrying out the new work that is being performed beyond the existing maintenance contract scope for the USNS Amelia Earhart. With the additional contract, HJ Heavy Industries expects its sales and profits to increase.
Yoo Sangchul, CEO of HJ Heavy Industries, said, “As this is our first MRO project, we are doing our utmost in process and quality control to meet the U.S. Navy’s stringent maintenance, repair, and overhaul requirements and quality standards,” adding, “We will focus all of the company’s capabilities on meeting the delivery deadline and handing over a high-quality vessel so that this project can serve as a foundation for building trust with the U.S. Navy.”
