Holiday food tops list of weight gain causes, followed by late-night snacks and drinking
96% plan to go on a diet after the holidays
It was found that nine out of ten women in their 20s and 30s have experienced weight gain during the Lunar New Year holidays in the past. Nearly 70% also responded that they are worried about gaining weight during this holiday period.
According to the results of a survey conducted by Enrise, which operates the online home training platform QUAT, on 229 female members in their 20s and 30s, 90% of respondents said they had experienced weight gain during previous Lunar New Year holidays. The proportion of respondents who said there is a possibility that their weight will increase during this Lunar New Year holiday was 68%, indicating that the burden of weight management during the holidays remains high.
Among respondents who expected to gain weight, 53% anticipated a gain of 1 to 2 kilograms, and 44% anticipated 2 to 3 kilograms. As for the main reasons for weight gain, "because I eat a lot of holiday food" was the most common at 85%, followed by "more late-night snacks and alcohol due to family gatherings" (51%) and "lack of time to exercise" (37%). This reflects the perception that not only simple overeating, but also overall lifestyle changes during the holiday period, lead to weight gain. There were also practical barriers that hinder starting exercise. The main factors cited were "disrupted lifestyle habits due to oversleeping and overeating" (71%), "worry about lack of willpower" (66%), and "reduced motivation to exercise due to cold weather" (53%).
Regarding exercise plans after the holidays, 96% responded that they "plan to start or resume exercising." The main goals of exercising were "weight loss" (69%) and "improving body shape and lines" (60%). In particular, among respondents whose goal was weight loss, 34% said they aim to lose "5 kilograms or more," showing a strong intention to actively go on a diet after the holidays.
As for how they plan to exercise after the holidays, "home Pilates" was mentioned the most. A total of 84% of respondents said they plan to do home training after the Lunar New Year holidays, and among them, 65% specifically chose home Pilates as their method. The most frequently cited reason was "because it is easy to continue consistently at home" (76%), followed by "because it seems helpful for correcting body posture and alignment" (42%), and "because it is effective for weight loss and line management" (34%). This is interpreted as reflecting the demand for exercises that can be practiced consistently indoors.
Enrise CEO Kim Bonggi said, "Women in their 20s and 30s clearly tend to look for exercises that they can continue steadily before and after the holidays, rather than pushing themselves for drastic short-term weight loss."
