First-Ever Global South Host...Strengthening International Cooperation as Co-Chair of the GPAI Ministerial Council
Bae Kyunghun, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, will attend the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in India as the head of the Korean delegation to lead discussions on global artificial intelligence (AI) governance. The plan is to strengthen international solidarity that focuses on the "social impact" of AI, going beyond mere technological competition.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae will attend the AI Impact Summit to be held in New Delhi, India, from the 18th to the 20th. The AI Summit is a leaders-level platform for discussing global governance, and this meeting is particularly meaningful as it is the first to be held in India, a Global South country that is an emerging and developing economy.

This meeting is the fourth in the series, following the theme of "Safety" in the United Kingdom in 2023, "Innovation and Inclusion" in Korea in 2024, and "Action" in France in 2025, and it will address as its core agenda the "impact" that AI has on society. Representatives from around 100 countries, along with leaders from industry and academia, will participate to discuss ways to expand the social benefits of AI.
At the opening ceremony and the heads-of-delegation session, Deputy Prime Minister Bae is scheduled to emphasize the importance of international cooperation to link AI technological advancement with the value of shared prosperity for humanity. He will also share Korea’s domestic policy experience, including AI-driven transformation cases in healthcare, manufacturing, and education based on competitiveness in semiconductors and digital infrastructure, as well as the implementation of the Basic Act on AI.
During the summit, he will seek ways to enhance technological and industrial cooperation through meetings with delegations from major countries, including the United States, and with global AI companies.
On the 20th, Deputy Prime Minister Bae will also co-chair (together with Singapore) and preside over the Ministerial Council of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI). GPAI is a multilateral consultative body on AI that was launched on the occasion of the G7 and was integrated into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2024.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae stated, "This summit will serve as an opportunity to solidify Korea’s capabilities and partnerships to take the lead in global AI governance," adding, "We will also expand AI diplomacy with Global South countries."
