Naju-si in South Jeolla Province is making all-out efforts for comprehensive quarantine measures to block African swine fever (ASF) that occurred at a pig farm in Bonghwang-myeon, including the emergency culling of about 1,400 pigs, the establishment of a quarantine zone, control of major roads, and support for farms.
Naju-si announced on February 11 that, following the outbreak of African swine fever on February 9, it completed the culling of about 1,400 pigs that had been raised at the affected farm on February 10.
To minimize leachate leakage and soil contamination, the carcasses were safely disposed of using FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) containers, and seven disinfection vehicles have been deployed in the area around the outbreak site to conduct intensive disinfection.
To block the introduction and spread of the disease due to increased movement of people and vehicles before and after the Lunar New Year holiday, the city is urgently supplying disinfectant and disposable protective clothing, which can be used until the quarantine area is lifted, to all pig farms within its jurisdiction.
In addition, five additional control posts have been installed on access roads to pig farms within a 10 km radius of the affected farm to restrict entry by outsiders.
For vehicles entering and leaving farms, such as feed and manure trucks, disinfection is being strengthened for the entire vehicle, including the wheels, undercarriage, and fenders. Preemptive blocking measures are also being implemented, including clinical surveillance and detailed testing, restrictions on the movement of livestock vehicles and workers, and intensive disinfection inside and outside pigsties and on nearby roads.
In particular, dedicated public officials have been assigned to farms within the quarantine zone and farms related to epidemiological investigations to check daily surveillance and compliance with disinfection measures, and to provide guidance so that any suspected symptoms are reported immediately, thereby concentrating administrative resources on post-management as well.
In addition, during the Lunar New Year holiday, the city plans to operate a quarantine situation room and maintain a 24-hour emergency contact network with the Livestock Cooperative, the Veterinary Association, and livestock organizations, while simultaneously conducting continuous on-site inspections and promotional activities to ensure that the spread of the disease is thoroughly blocked.
An official from Naju-si said, "We are mobilizing all possible administrative resources and making every effort to block and prevent the further spread of African swine fever," and added, "We strongly urge pig farms to strictly comply with basic quarantine rules, including controlling access by outsiders and thorough disinfection."
