Prime Minister Kim: "U.S. House Drafted Coupang Document with Distorted Information... Relevant Agencies Are Responding"

"Coupang Case Should Be Handled in Accordance With Our Legal System"

Prime Minister Kim Minseok said regarding the recent subpoena sent by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to Harold Rogers, acting CEO of Coupang, which claimed that the Korean government is discriminating against Coupang, that he views it as "a document drafted by the House based on distorted information."

During the government questioning session at the National Assembly on the 11th, when Kim Seungwon, a lawmaker of the Democratic Party of Korea, pointed out problems with the content of the subpoena, Prime Minister Kim responded, "It is not something to be dealt with in a discriminatory manner, and it is sufficient to handle only the parts where there are actual issues in accordance with our legal system," making these remarks.

When Representative Kim asked whether the government is responding to the U.S. House of Representatives by explaining the facts, Prime Minister Kim replied, "We checked whether the Prime Minister's Office should take charge of this, and I received a report that each relevant institution, including our Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States, is organizing the factual details, conveying them, and working to have them reflected."

When Representative Kim further highlighted the seriousness of the data breach incident, saying that "the suspect in the Coupang personal information leak selected 3,000 people who had ordered adult products and blackmailed them," Prime Minister Kim assessed, "From the overall scale of the leak to its content, I think it is almost unprecedented."

Meanwhile, when Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Sangshik pointed out that "there is no movement toward constitutional amendment," Prime Minister Kim answered, "I believe constitutional amendment is important and necessary, and I think it would be best for us to follow closely what proceeds in the National Assembly under the leadership of National Assembly Speaker Woo Wonsik."

When Representative Lee also asked whether the "Yongin semiconductor cluster" could be changed, Prime Minister Kim reaffirmed, "The government will not artificially change what has been determined by market judgment and corporate decisions."
