Said He Would Never Drive Again... License-Free and Drunk Driving by Trick

Man In His 30s, Identified As A, Transfers Title To Family But Continues Driving

A man in his 30s who had been caught several times driving without a license submitted documents claiming he had sold his car, but they turned out to be false, leading prosecutors to seize the vehicle.

According to the Criminal Division 5 of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office, after conducting a supplementary investigation directly into a man in his 30s, identified as A, who had been caught for the fifth time for drunk driving and driving without a license and was referred to the prosecution, they seized a vehicle that had only been formally transferred into a family member's name and indicted him without detention, they said on the 3rd.

According to prosecutors, A claimed he had sold the vehicle, saying he would never drive again. However, after reviewing the documents, prosecutors found that he had merely transferred the vehicle's title to his father and older sister while continuing to keep the car. It was revealed that he had driven without a license and under the influence of alcohol for about four months. After obtaining a search and seizure warrant, prosecutors seized A's vehicle and confirmed that he had driven without a license on 45 occasions.

A prosecution official said, "We closely examined the vehicle sale documents submitted as sentencing materials in drunk driving cases and reconfirmed that seizure is possible if the defendant is the actual owner of the vehicle, even if the car was not registered in the defendant's name at the time of the drunk driving offense," adding, "We will respond by conducting supplementary investigations and other measures to prevent repeat drunk driving offenses."
