Yangcheon District to Invest 2 Billion KRW in Modernizing Traditional Market Facilities

New Customer Support Center at Omokgyo Market
Facility Upgrades for 19 Markets and Shopping Streets

Yangcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Kijae) will invest 2 billion KRW this year to carry out a facility modernization project targeting 19 traditional markets and alley-type shopping streets within the district. The plan is to renovate outdated facilities and expand convenience amenities to create a safe and pleasant market environment.

Key projects include the construction of a new customer support center at Omokgyo Jungang Market, replacement of the shared warehouse freezer at Mokdong Kkaebi Market, replacement of the LED signboard at the entrance of Gyeongchang Market, and maintenance of fire safety, pedestrian, and information facilities at registered markets and alley-type shopping streets.

At Omokgyo Jungang Market, a new customer support center will be built as a three-story building with a total floor area of approximately 127 square meters. The first floor will house public restrooms, the second floor will be used for the merchants' association office, and the third floor will serve as a multipurpose space, operating as a comprehensive convenience facility accessible to both merchants and customers. The construction is scheduled for completion by October next year.

Yangcheon District currently operates customer support centers at four locations: Gyeongchang Market, Shinyeong Market, Mokdong Kkaebi Market, and Moksarang Market. With the new customer support center at Omokgyo Jungang Market, the number of support hubs for traditional markets will increase to five.

At Mokdong Kkaebi Market, the aging shared warehouse freezer facilities will be completely replaced. Reflecting the market's high proportion of food handling, the district plans to improve storage and preservation conditions, thereby enhancing hygiene standards and consumer trust.

At Gyeongchang Market, the entrance LED signboard and awning will be newly replaced. By renovating the market entrance, which had reduced visibility due to aging, the district aims to increase visitor recognition, and by installing an awning to shield from rain and sunlight, it will provide a more comfortable market environment.

In addition, the district will continue to carry out facility maintenance projects for traditional markets and alley-type shopping streets. Year-round inspections and repairs will focus on safety facilities such as electrical, gas, and fire systems, and even unregistered markets will receive support for urgent repairs, aiming to eliminate safety blind spots.

Last year, Yangcheon District also invested approximately 3.7 billion KRW to implement facility improvements, including the replacement of the arcade at Moksarang Market and maintenance of public electrical lines at Mokdong Kkaebi Market.

Lee Kijae, Mayor of Yangcheon District, stated, "We expect that these facility improvements will strengthen the foundation for market operations and further enhance visitor convenience. Through ongoing modernization and environmental upgrades, we will create changes that both merchants and customers can truly feel, thereby increasing the competitiveness of traditional markets."
